5 Tips to Help You Plan the Perfect Beach Photo Session

5 Tips to Help You Plan the Perfect Beach Photo Session

The beach is an ideal location for nearly any type of photo session and for good reason. From the relaxing atmosphere and warm sand to the beautiful backdrops it offers, if you’ve chosen the beach for your next photoshoot, you’ve chosen wisely.

Let’s help you make the most of your session by leaving you with some essential tips.

1. Timing Matters

First prize is to schedule your beach shoot during golden hour, which offers the best lighting. However, don’t be put off if you wake up to cloudy weather on the day of your shoot. In fact, overcast weather gives you more freedom to shoot later in the day because it diffuses sunlight. If the weather is set to be good though, opt for a sunrise or sunset session.

2. White and Khaki Colors are Not a Must

While white and khaki clothing does look good, it can potentially make you look washed out on the beach. If you are going to wear white or khaki, combine it with other, brighter colors. Not only does it add some additional interest to your shots, but it ensures you remain the primary subject in the photo.

3. Add Some Interest with Props

Props are underrated, especially when it comes to beach photoshoots. It doesn’t matter whether you’re planning a family or an engagement session, consider bringing at least one prop along. Planning an engagement session? A blanket or umbrella makes for a perfect prop. Shooting with younger children? Buckets and spades add a pop of color and they give your photographer the chance to capture a few candid photos of your kids.

4. Use the Water to Your Advantage

Don’t be afraid to get in the water. Obviously, you don’t need to immerse your entire body, but some splashing in the waves makes for beautiful shots. If you’re worried about your clothing, save these shots for the end of your session.

5. Think Twice About Those Matching Outfits

Matching outfits are outdated. It’s perfectly fine to coordinate your outfits, but there’s no reason for everyone to look the same. In fact, it could make your beach photos more dull. And while we’re on the topic of clothing, stay away from overly busy patterns and shirts with logos – aim to wear something timeless instead.

And above all else, as much as you want to capture the photos you’ve been dreaming about, this beach session is all about having fun. When you focus on having a good time, your photographer can take care of the rest without much effort.
